Major Gets New Final Original Anime

This year's 48th issue of Shogakukan's Weekly Shonen Sunday magazine is announcing on Wednesday that an all-new, "truly the last" original video anime project of Takuya Mitsuda's Major baseball manga will debut in the middle of December. A new OVA volume will be bundled with the first new special compiled book volume (tankōbon) of the manga.

The OVA project will adapt the thus-far-unanimated World Series arc and the story's illusive final matchup, while the new book will let fans see the last pitch in the manga. The project promises the return of the "Golden Battery" in America.

The original manga ended in July of 2010 after a 16-year run. The story follows Gorō, the son of a major league batter who dreams of making it big himself. The manga began in the magazine in late 1994.

The manga inspired its first television anime series in 2004, and the sixth television anime series launched last year. The manga also inspired an anime film titled Major: Yūjō no Winning Shot in 2008. The 78th and (at the time) final limited-edition manga volume shipped last December with a special OVA.

A compiled book volume of BUYUDEN, the boxing manga that Mitsuda launched this past March, will also ship in the middle of this December.

Sentai Filmworks Licenses Broken Blade Anime Films

Sentai Filmworks announced on Monday that it has licensed the six-part anime film series Broken Blade (Break Blade). The Anime Network will stream the film series online starting in October, and Sentai Filmworks will release the series on DVD and Blu-ray Disc in 2012.

The series was directed by chief director Tetsuro Amino (Macross 7, Shiki) and director Nobuyoshi Habara (Negima!, Fafner), with Production I.G and Xebec handling the animation. Masashi Sogo (Bleach, Fairy Tail, Gantz) wrote the screenplay.

The film series is based on Yunosuke Yoshinaga's alternate-world robot manga. Flex Comix publishes the manga in Japan, while CMX Manga published three manga volumes in North America before DC Comics shut down the imprint last year.

Sentai Filmworks describes the film series as follows:
In Cruzon, children are born with the ability to control quartz. This power allows them to levitate simple objects—or control enormous and complex mobile battle suits called Golems. But when an ancient Golem is discovered during the height of a brutal war, a young king and his beautiful queen turn to Rygart Arrow. Though an “un-sorcerer”, Rygart can miraculously pilot this ancient and powerful weapon. But in war, school friends can turn into bitter enemies and allies have suspicious motives.

L'Arc~en~Ciel Performs Manga-Based Wild 7 Film's Theme

Rock band L'Arc~en~Ciel will sing the theme song for this year's manga-based Wild 7 film adaptation directed by Eiichirō Hasumi. The group's lead singer hyde will perform the vocals in the song for which a title has not yet been announced. The live-action film, based on Mikiya Mochizuki's police action manga, will open in Japan on December 21.

The film's executive producer Hiroyoshi Koiwai (L change the WorLd, ICHI) said L'Arc~en~Ciel was picked for the role because their sound will blend well with the film's dark and serious yet youthful and sexy atmosphere. After reading the film's script, Hyde said he tried his best to fit the song for the film by creating the sensation of riding a motorcycle.

Mochizuki's original manga follows the story of seven motorcycle-riding outlaws who catch criminals that have protection from the regular police force. In the film, Wild 7 has to find the group plotting to release a deadly virus in the sky over Tokyo. Actor Eita (Nodame Cantabile, Azumi, Densha Otoko) will star in the film as Dairoku Hiba, the young leader of the Wild 7 secret police team.

The Wild 7 manga originally serialized from 1969 to 1979 in Shonengahosha's Weekly Shōnen King magazine. Mochizuki drew three manga sequels to the original series, and his story also provided the basis for live-action television drama, television anime, and original video anime (OVA) adaptations.

Hasumi's upcoming live-action film will also receive its own manga adaptation in Shonengahosha's Young King magazine.

Sony's Shuhei Yoshida Outlines PlayStation Vita Remote Play Plans

At the Tokyo Game Show a couple of weeks back, Sony demonstrated Remote Play on PlayStation Vita, showing PlayStation 3's Killzone 3 being played remotely on the portable system. Sony Worldwide Studios President Shuhei Yoshida has shared additional details on the company's Remote Play plans in an interview in this week's Famitsu.

The TGS demonstration was actually done via a wired connection between the PS3 and Vita. This was necessary because of the high volume of people at the event potentially causing interference. Yoshida promised that in more realistic circumstances, you'll be able to play wirelessly at the same level of speed shown at the event.

PS3 titles that are played via Remote Play need a bit of customization for memory and CPU use. Sony is finishing up work on a library that facilitates this and will be sending a beta version of this out to developers to test upcoming and old titles.

While Yoshida did not say when Remote Play support will be ready for PS3 games, Vita owners will get to try out one area of Remote Play at launch. Sony is finishing up work on the required customizations for Torne, a popular first party device that gives the PS3 digital video recorder capabilities. Following a December update, this will support Remote Play on Vita.

Outside of pure Remote Play, Vita can be used as a controller for your PlayStation 3. The system's screen can also act as a sub monitor. Yoshida said that Sony is looking into creating utility libraries that will allow PS3 developers to use the Vita's touch screen. (andriasang)

The newly formed production company Marvelous AQL announced on Wednesday that a web browser game inspired by the new Evangelion films has been green-lit for production. The tentatively titled Browser Evangelion Shin Gekijōban game for personal computers was not revealed or leaked before its surprise announcement at Marvelous AQL's press conference for new titles. Akatsuka Fujio’s classic magical girl manga “Himitsu no Akko-chan” has a live-action movie in the works. Actress Ayase Haruka (26) will take on the starring role, while Okada Masaki (22) will play the male lead.

Healing Music, Digital Manga Guild's 2nd Work, Released

Digital Manga, Inc.'s Digital Manga Guild released its second manga, Tatsumi Kaiya's Healing Music, on the eManga.com website on Monday. The manga was localized by the group BLBangBang.

The Digital Manga Guild was first announced at Yaoi-Con 2010 as a collaboration between Digital Manga, Inc., Japanese publishers, and a community of fans to release literally hundreds of titles online for distribution. Under the program, the guild members are credited and paid royalties from online purchases, and the works may be published in print if they prove to be popular.

Kaiya's other works include Physical Attraction, Party, Love Training, and Hot Steamy Glasses, all of which have been published in English by Digital Manga Publishing.

Emanga.com describes Healing Music as follows:

Kunio Tokiwa, a spontaneous and gifted pianist, has always been motivated by his desire to please his uncle, a piano tuner. When his uncle dies, Kunio is lost. The night he's about to give up the piano entirely, Kunio is stunned by the sound of a piano tuned and played by the beautiful Yui Hasegawa. Reminded of his beloved uncle, Kunio devotes himself to gaining both Yui's exclusive service and his approval. Not even Yui's cold, mystifying behavior can stop Kunio's efforts, but he keeps hitting sour notes in his clumsy struggles to figure out why Yui's existence is so important to him. When Kunio's words create confusion and hurt, he must find another way to communicate. Can Kunio's Healing Music convince Yui that he's not a replacement for Kunio's uncle and bring them together for an unforgettable, lifelong duet?

DMG releases are available for purchase at emanga.com, which streams content through an Adobe Flash player, allowing readers to access their library wherever they have an Internet connection. Healing Music and most DMG titles will be priced at US$6.95 or 695 points. DMG released its first title, Aida Saki and Yugi Yamada's Tired of Waiting for Love, in August. (Anime News Network)

Kouji Wada Puts Career on Hold Due to Cancer

Kouji Wada, the 37-year-old singer of theme songs for almost every Digimon anime project, announced on Tuesday that he is putting his singing career on hold so he can focus on treatment for a sudden illness. Wada had gone on hiatus eight years ago due to an earlier bout with illness; that time, he revealed few details about his condition, but he resolved this time to tell everything about his current illness.

Eight years ago, a malignant tumor was discovered on his upper pharynx and a lymph node on his neck. He was able to treat the tumor with chemotherapy and surgery and was told that he had recovered completely.

However, he felt a change in his health recently, and an examination at a hospital confirmed that the cancer had metastasized or spread to another location. The diagnosis came as a sudden shock to Wada, but he is striving to focus on immediate medical treatment so he can return to normal again.

As a result, he has to put his singing career on hold, and he apologized for the sudden notice. He will take a break from his blog, Twitter account, and Facebook account, and he has cancelled all scheduled events related to his career for the rest of the year. He apologized to his fans who were anticipating his appearances in Chile and Peru, as well as his guest performance at an X'mas live concert in December. He had planned to resume his solo concerts in November, but they have been delayed.

Nevertheless, he promised that when he returns, it will be with a smile as he spends "the best of times with the best of friends in concert" again.

Wada sang songs for Digimon Adventure, Digimon Adventure 02, Digimon Tamers, Digimon Frontier, Digimon: Data Squad, and Digimon Xros Wars. He also performed the opening theme song for the original Japanese version of Transformers: Robots in Disguise (Transformers: Car Robots). (ANN)

Gundam Game for iPhone/iPad Released

Bandai Namco Games released Gundam Area Wars, an augmented-reality online game based on the Gundam robot anime franchise, as a Japanese app for the Apple iPhone and iPad devices on Friday. In this simulation game, a player carries out missions to defeat enemy mobile suits and take over their bases — and thus upgrade and expand his or her own forces.

The game uses the iPhone's camera and gyroscopic sensors to display the opposing mobile suits as "life-size" 3D models against the player's landscape in the real world. The game can also use the iPhone or iPad's Global Positioning System to set up different missions and mobile suit battles, depending on where the player is in the real world.

As the player progresses through missions and collect more mobile suits, he or she can display tabletop "digital figures" of the mobile suits by placing printable AR markers in the real world.

The main game itself is free, but various mission orders and add-ons are in-app purchases. Bandai Namco Games will be hosting monthly Federation vs. Zeon team battles. (ANN)
